Support to the
Establishment of National Human Rights Commission |
|
Brief Description
This project is supporting the Ministry of Justice, Human Rights and Rehabilitation in
its efforts to establish a National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)
for Lesotho. An independent, robust NHCR will be able to effectively
promote public awareness and increase public education about human
rights as well as civil, economic, political, social and cultural
rights. The Commission will also be appropriately staffed so as to
help oversee a paradigm shift whereby respect for human rights would
be central to government, business and NGO policies. UNDP, together
with OHCHR, the Ministry of Justice, Human Rights and
Rehabilitation, the Lesotho Justice Sector Development Programme and
Civil Society Organisations will work together to establish a NHRC.
Cooperation throughout the process will ensure thoughtful
construction of this institution, which in turn, will strengthen the
social fabric of Lesotho.
