The establishment of the Joint UN Team
on AIDS demonstrates that the United Nations system is committed to
supporting the Government and people of Lesotho in their efforts to
achieve universal access to HIV prevention, care and support by
2010, in line with the commitments made at the UNGASS high level
meeting on AIDS in 2006.
The Joint UN Programme of Support on
AIDS is aligned behind the Government of Lesotho National HIV & AIDS
Strategic Plan (2006-2011). The Joint Programme has four areas of
focus, which support the four Strategic Focus areas of the NSP. The
focus is on:
-
Making available international
normative technical input to the development of policies and
strategies in a number of key areas;
-
Making available high quality
technical expertise to support the development of guidelines,
curricula, training, capacity building and technical support for the
implementation by government and stakeholders of approved policies
and programmes;
-
Advocating for the adoption and
implementation of human-rights based approaches and programmes in
line with the UN’s mandate; and
-
Convening and facilitating greater,
more effective involvement of civil society and closer partnership
between civil society, the public and private sectors.
The Joint UN Programme of Support on
AIDS (JUPSA) is currently in its final stages of approval.
