UNDP Supports KYS Campaign
UNDP and the UN
family in Lesotho have been supporting the implementation mechanisms
of the campaign, and it is through one of the projects that a mobile
HIV Testing and Counselling (HTC) Unit was given to the Ministry of

UNDP Supports
Lesotho’s MDG-based Strategy for Growth and Poverty Reduction
(2008-2012)
The Government of Lesotho, with the
assistance of its Development Partners, developed the first Poverty
Reduction Strategy (PRS), 2004/05-2006/07 in 2004. The PRS was
socially-focused, significantly inclusive, and was intended to make
quick gains in poverty reduction where previous planning approaches
had failed.

Youth
employment in Lesotho
On the 1st of
February 2007, the Ministry of Gender and Youth, Sports and
Recreation assisted by a joint UN partnership consisting of UNDP,
ILO, UNICEF and FAO, launched a project named, “Youth Employment
Promotion towards Poverty Reduction in Lesotho”.

Recently the United
Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Lesotho Country Office (CO) has
taken up the challenge of ebbing and flowing with the waves of
change. It has embarked on a journey of Change Management to examine
itself to ensure that its vision and existence are not becoming
stagnant and ineffective to the country it aims to serve.

UNDP supports
e-Government in Lesotho to address issues of poor service delivery
Once the opening
ceremony is over, it is not that common to see a senior government
official remain for detailed working sessions in a technical
workshop, so it was indeed inspiring to witness the personal
commitment of the Minister of Communications, Science and
Technology, Hon. Mothetjoa Metsing, when after officially opening a
recent UNDP-sponsored e-Government workshop, he remained and
actively participated for the entire workshop.

Community of Practice (COP) Innovation Fund...Enhancing UNDP
Lesotho's capacity in becoming carbon neutral and testing carbon
calculator
UNDP Lesotho Country Office is pleased
to announce that in August 2007 they were selected and given an
award to assist with their proposal to create an action plan to work
towards enhancing the capacity of the Country Office in becoming
carbon neutral and on testing of the carbon calculator. This is
being done in partnership with Head Quarters, Lesotho Country
Office, Zimbabwe Country Office, Zambia Country Office, and South
Africa Country Office; and thus provides a model for the UNDP.

Sustainable Land Management in Lesotho
Land management remains an intractable problem for Lesotho
threatening agricultural production despite the fact that in the
face of increasing unemployment the majority of the people continue
to depend on the land for survival. The implications of current
unsustainable land management patterns and epic land degradation
trends transcend national boundaries.

Based Planning in the context
of
HIV and AIDS Seminar
A team of six Basotho representing the National AIDS Commission;
Ministry of Health & Social Welfare (Health Planning & Statistics
Unit); Ministry of Public Service; Ministry of Justice, Human Rights
and Correctional Services; Ministry of Local Government and the UNDP
participated in a 5 day seminar organised by the
UNDP
Regional Service Centre for Eastern and Southern Africa (RSCESA)
held in Durban, South Africa from 25 – 29 June 2007 for development
practitioners and planners from Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Nigeria,
and Zimbabwe.

Government of Lesotho Senators sensitized on issues of human rights
and HIV&AIDS
In May this year,
UNDP Lesotho, through its Parliamentary support project, and in
partnership with the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, recently
organized a one-day sensitization workshop for the Senators on
issues relating to HIV and AIDS and Human Rights. Sensitizing
leaders of the society is in line with recognition by the Government
and the Unite Nations system in Lesotho, of the importance of all
stakeholders, to scale up the response to the impact of HIV and AIDS
as part of poverty reduction strategies.

HIV &
AIDS at the core of Local and Development Planning in Lesotho
With a population
of about 1.8 million, Lesotho has the third highest HIV prevalence
rate in the world, with 23.2% of the adult population infected, and
the country has been making efforts to halt the spread and mitigate
the impact of the pandemic on the population. UNDP, in collaboration
with the Ministry of Finance & Development Planning and the UNDP
Regional Service Centre, is supporting the country to take
appropriate measures in this regard.

Lesotho's
General Elections Free and Fair
On 17th February 2007,
Lesotho held its sixth general election since Independence from
Britain 40 years ago. In a virtual landslide, the ruling Lesotho
Congress for Democracy (LCD) won 61 of the 79 constituency seats
contested, the All Basotho Convention (ABC) came second with 17
seats and the Alliance of Congress Parties (ACP) got one seat. A
total of 14 parties had entered the race.

AIDS Day 2006 commemorated in Quthing, Lesotho - “Keep the Promise”.
Every year the Government chooses a different district in which to
host the World AIDS Day commemoration. Today, government officials,
national and international development partners and media had
traveled the two hours from the capital town of Maseru to the Quthing District in the rural part of the south of the country.

Conference for Lesotho – 20th to 24th November 2006
The UNDP Deputy Assistant Administrator and Deputy Director for the
Regional Bureau for Africa, Mr. Jeffrey Avina, was recently on
mission in Lesotho, at the invitation of the Government’s Ministry
of Finance and Development Planning, to co-chair the Ninth Round
Table Conference for Lesotho on 20th to 24th November.

Charter of the United Nations. The Government of Lesotho and the
resident UN agencies, celebrate UNITED NATIONS DAY on Tuesday 24th
October 2006 at the National Convention Centre in Maseru.

Lesotho celebrates International Day of Peace
The United Nation Lesotho staff commemorated the International Day
of Peace on Thursday the 21st of September 2006 in the UN Conference
Room, Maseru. Attended by all staff of UN agencies residing in
Lesotho (UNDP, UNICEF, FAO, WHO, UNFPA, UNAIDS, WFP and World Bank)
the commemoration was officiated by the Acting Resident
representative, Dr. Angela Benson.

Community Capacity Enhancement Programme at its Peak in the Mountain
Kingdom of Lesotho
Since its launch in Lesotho in September 2005, the Community
Capacity Enhancement Programme (CCEP) has brought together, from
across the ten districts of the country - civil society
organizations, faith-based organizations, Government Ministries,
organisations of people living with HIV & AIDS- to sit together,
speak in one tongue and in one voice in the fight against fear,
stigma and discrimination associated with HIV and AIDS
