The
UN day celebrations in 2010 in Lesotho were marked by a full week of
activities to promote the Millennium Development Goals and support
for their achievement in Lesotho.
Firstly, heads of UN agencies went to
different schools in the country (both urban and rural and from
different economic backgrounds). Pupils were sensitized on the MDGs
and the status for Lesotho as well as what the UN is doing to help
the country achieve the goals. Discussions also focused on what the
youth themselves could do in support of the MDGs. As a result,
several students have subsequently volunteered to monitor the MDG
situation at local level and to get more information in terms of the
reasons why Lesotho is behind on certain goals.
Secondly, several activities took
place to promote awareness on climate change challenges in Lesotho
such as the official launch of the Lesotho Renewable Energy Based
Rural Electrification project (UNDP/GEF) by the Honourable Minister
of Natural Resources and the UNDP Resident Representative. That same
day, a nation wide television and radio debate took place with key
stakeholders on climate change. Several other radio interviews were
conducted during the week on the MDGs in general and the status in
Lesotho.
The celebrations culminated in an
activity where his Majesty the King and the Right Honourable the
Prime Minister led the UN Country Team and his Cabinet Ministers,
NGO, CSO and private sector representatives to plant "Trees with a
Goal". Each stakeholder was invited to choose a goal for which a
tree was planted. By symbolically planting the tree the stakeholder
also committed to take responsibility for the related Millennium
Development Goal.

The last event was the international dinner (cooked by UN staff from
all different nationalities) to which all the dignitaries were
invited. Just before the dinner, the Right Honourable the
Prime Minister Mr. Pakalitha Mosisili launched both the official
MDG 2008 report as well as the
2009 status update.
