Lesotho is faced with many challenges caused by the triple threat of
the HIV and AIDS pandemic, deep-rooted poverty and food insecurity
and weakened governance. These challenges undermine past gains in
socio-economic and human development and need to be addressed
urgently. The net result is a negative impact on the country's
progress towards achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
UNDP Lesotho has
been using its unique position as a trusted development partner to
bring forward the democratic governance agenda through strategic
support to deepening democracy, providing policy advice and
advocacy, and strengthening capacity for the development plans, such
as: the National Vision 2020, the Poverty Reduction Strategy, and
the Public Sector Improvement and Reform Programme.
UNDP Lesotho's
collaboration and support to the Government and people of Lesotho is
governed by the Country Programme Document 2005 - 2007. The
programme is designed to ensure an integrated response to the
complex and rapidly worsening development in a democratic,
transparent and HIV & AIDS competent society.
In response to the
country's challenges, UNDP Lesotho supports development programmes
