Introduction to Sesotho
Language and Culture
“Ke bua Sesotho hanyane.” These were the first words uttered by
volunteers who recently attended local language training.

The UNV volunteers are encouraged to enhance their local language
skills and the culture of their host country. The aim is to allow
volunteers to adapt as quickly as possible to their new country of
assignment. Since 2005, we in UNV Lesotho had been sending our new
volunteers to Morija Guest House to attend this very important
training.
Moving to a new country and environment with no friends or relatives
can be a daunting task. This can lead to lack of motivation,
depression and weak work performance in the volunteer. One of the
contributing factor in volunteers leaving their assignment before
the end is culture shock. Culture shock is a state of loss and
disorientation precipitated by a change in the environment which
requires adjustment.
This very exciting training allows for the volunteers to get
firsthand knowledge from a very well trained Sesotho teacher.
This is what UNV Intern Ms. Giulia Pelosi, with UNDP Governance Unit
had to say about the training;
“The weekend in Morija was an amazing experience, since it provided
us with a first contact with the Sesotho culture. Apart from the
beauty of the place, the food and the hiking, we enjoy the weekend
learning Sesotho language and customs. During these three days we
were totally immersed into the Sesotho’s culture. We attended
classes with a local teacher who not only taught us the basis of
Sesotho that are necessary for a first connection with the people,
but also provided us with information and experience about Sesotho
lifestyle and traditions.”
