Background
From early beginnings with three UNV Volunteers in 1970 our numbers
grew to 15, by1976. To date, almost 350 UNV Volunteers have served
in Lesotho, among them four National UNV Volunteers, specialising in
development and environmental management for poverty reduction. We
have also enjoyed the contribution to Lesotho development of several
UNV Interns during that time.
Our UNV Volunteer projects in Lesotho have focused on agriculture;
community; infrastructure and rural development; healthcare and the
creation of local employment. UNV Volunteer specialists have also
been central to capacity development across government departments
and the civil service.
Steps along the way
2007: Poverty monitoring and reporting within
the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning are the ongoing
remit of our UNV Volunteer Social Statistician, with particular
reference to the Millennium Development Goals.
Four of our UNV Volunteers continue to be engaged in the design,
delivery and management of key World Food Programmme projects and
units.
Two UNV Volunteers are active in the development and management of
the Greater Involvement and Empowerment of People living with
HIV/AIDS (GIEPA) project.
One UNV Volunteer is using her specialist expertise to develop ICT
competencies within the Ministry of Local Government and
Chieftainships.
Another of our UNV Volunteers coordinates the UNV Programme Office
with the support of UNDP staff.
Human Rights and the establishment of a Human Rights Commission for
the Kingdom of Lesotho are the key concern of our UNV Intern.
